Test Your Computer
It is recommended that you test your computer using the Client Assessment Tool (CAT) before you enter the campus and attempt to register your machine on the university's network. This is a good way to find out whether your computer has the required Windows Updates and a valid anti-virus program, or if these are things you need to install before attempting to register. Testing your computer saves you time, so you can connect to the Internet without any problem at the start of each semester.

You will be told if you pass or fail the CAT test. If you pass, this means you can proceed with the registration process. If you fail, you will be told which updates you need to install. Please be reminded that Symantec AntiVirus software is offered to all registered students free of charge and can be downloaded from Softweb.

Steps to Run CAT
  1. Turn Automatic Detect Settings in Internet Explorer. To do this, launch Internet Explorer and go to Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings. Make sure Automatic Detect Settings is checked off.
  2. Perform Windows critical updates. To perform Windows Updates using a Windows XP machine, go to your Start menu > All Programs > Windows Update. Click the Express button and then Install Updates.
To perform Windows Updates using a Windows Vista machine, go to your Start menu > All Programs > Windows Update. Click Check for updates in the upper left corner. You may be prompted to restart your computer after installing the updates. If so, restart your machine.
  3. Update your anti-virus software definitions. If you have a 90-day trial version of anti-virus software, you need to uninstall it from your machine and install Symantec AntiVirus from Softweb.
  4. Download the Client Assessment Tool (Cat.exe) to your computer.s desktop
  5. Double click the CAT icon that you saved to your desktop and follow the instructions.
